Haunt is Trevor William Church's (bassist from Beastmaker) side project and unlike his main band, which plays doom/stoner, it is a retro NWOBHM band. Luminous Eyes is the band's debut release, a 4-song EP with a simple production, a little echo on the vocals, some distortion on the guitars and the hard rock-tinged songwriting characteristic of early 80s metal from the U.K. The compositions are simple and straightforward to the point of actually being a little dull at times. You can tell Church is going for the same D.I.Y. sound of bands like High Spirits and Züül and he captures it, so if you like that kind of stuff, Luminous Eyes is worth tracking down. Personally, I find the sound too restrained and the songwriting too safe, making Haunt a lot less exciting than it could be. |
