Initially, I was spelling Yuri Fulone's name "Falone" which, combined with the fantasy power metal of his debut, Your Kingdom Will Fall, had me thinking he was Italian but he's actually from Brazil. I'm not sure if this is a solo project or a full band but either way the old-school power metal, heavy on the guitars and catchy choruses, is music to my ears. The songwriting is simple and flashy only to the point required by the style; Fulone doesn't add a bunch of fretboard runs or keyboard flourishes unnecessarily. The solos have a bit of Yngwie Malmsteen's vibe, which combined with the gruff shout of the vocals brings to mind early Burning Point (when Pete Ahonen still handled the microphone) or the dearly departed Glen Metal-led Cryonic Temple. This style may have been on the decline since the Louder than the Dragon compilations, but Yuri Fulone has done an admirable job of reminding us that when done right, crunchy power metal can be awesome. |
