It had been a while since I had heard anything "new" from these Montreal-based heavy/speed metallers so, when I found two releases on Bandcamp, I just had to have them. This EP is not perfect but is pretty good at showcasing what Metalian are all about – for those who haven't seen their great live performances. Metalian still sound like an 80s band, and that's how I like them. Their sound is heavy and sometimes a bit dark-ish, but their songs are very catchy and there's no way at least a couple of them won't be stuck in your head after just one listen. I first heard the title track by watching their video on YouTube a few years ago and was still humming it before getting this EP. So, yeah, my condition has now gotten worse after several listens. I find that the opening instrumental works better in a live setting, but it's cool to have it on disk. A few songs are a little too repetitive at times, but they don't get to the point of overstaying their welcome. Fast, heavy, catchy, hooky riffs, vocal melodies that get you singing (sucks for those around you), this is pure 80s heavy/speed metal: Lots of fun, lots of foot-tapping, and watch out for those raised fists. |
