A Battle Won is the second full-length from Sweden's Binary Creed, a band that strikes the delicate balance between power and progressive right on the nose. The high-pitched vocals convey emotion without screaming or heavy reliance on ear-piercing high notes and the songwriting smartly avoids drowning the riffs in keyboard or guitar flourishes. There are some truly catchy choruses on tracks like "The Fallen King" and "Black Storm," something I find a lot of progressive bands lose sight of when trying to cram in as many runs and arpeggios in each song as possible. I liken their sound to Mob Rules with a bit of Conquest and even Queensrÿche in the vocal lines. An enjoyable album from start to finish. |
