Wederganger, which translates to "one who walks again" and referring to an undead that returns to the world of the living, is a three-piece Black Metal band from The Netherlands, formed in 2013. Wederganger's debut album, titled Halfvergaan Ontwaakt (the album title is written in Dutch, and I simply have no idea what on earth it means in English – and am way too lazy to find it out, sorry!), offers a set of grim, icy, dark, partly unorthodox and primitive Black Metal. "Schimmenspel" is entirely played on the piano, bringing the listener nicely away from the grim and darkened realm of these Dutch Black metallers. Also, "Walmend Graf" starts off like a 70s proto-Doom Metal song with a simple yet crispy guitar riff, which always works in my books. Other than that, it turns out to be one of the most interesting songs off this record, if not the most interesting one. Wederganger trust the most common elements in Black Metal. Halfvergaan Ontwaakt is a relatively decent offering from Wederganger, but then again stepping out from the mass of thousands of other Black Metal acts in the future will be an entirely new endeavor. |
