I was under the impression that this was a doom metal album, so I was quite surprised when I started listening to it and found it to sound nothing like the doom stuff I've heard before.. Hell, instead of wanting to kill myself or simply falling asleep, I found myself headbanging quite a bit. I've seen the band referred to as "Stoner doom", but not being too knowledgeable on stoner bands, I'll just call it based on what I hear, and what I hear is pretty close to 80s heavy metal with a modern production and a modern musical touch blended in. Think traditional metal mixed with some "clean" thrash overtones, flirting a bit with speed metal. Lost? So am I. Goat Horn is one of those bands that I'd rather not categorise and just sit back and enjoy the music. The vocals are clean to some extent, but quite raspy and raucous at times, which fits the overall aggressive tone of the music quite well. Nothing to complain about, and same on the musical side - this album is top notch from beginning to end, with no boring parts whatsoever (keeping the album at a reasonable length like they did always help, although I get the feeling they could have filled the whole CD without getting boring...) The music is quite loaded and I found myself discovering new things almost on each new listen; there's always something going on in the background that'll eventually pop up and reach your ears - bottom line, even after several spins one doesn't feel like taking this out of the CD player. These guys sure know how to keep things interesting.
I don't know if the band's debut sounds anything like this album, but all I can say is I wish more bands came up with such quality releases. Go. Buy. Now.
