After bursting on the scene last year with the album Countersighns, Shane Wacaster and Toby Knapp, collectively Necrytis, are back with a second full-length titled Dread en Ruin. If you liked the first album, you'll really like this one. More of the same old school U.S. metal sound infiltrates Dread en Ruin with Knapp's signature guitar sound but the songwriting is more complex and intriguing this time around. It still has that Onward vibe but there is also a Fates Warning feel to songs like "Odyssey Divine" and the epic-length album closer "Heresiarch Profane." While Necrytis clearly has roots in U.S. metal from the 80s, honestly, they don't sound like many other artists and how often can you say that? Complex, energetic and thoroughly engaging; that's Dread en Ruin in a nutshell. |
