I sure do love old-school metal, even when it is of the retro variety like what you get on Mankind Resistance, the debut album from Spain's Iron Hunter. Nothing here is new or inventive and that is the glorious point. From the NWOBHM riffs to the Maiden-esque twin leads to the Ron Keel-inspired vocals, it's all early 80s. Literally. I love a screaming solo, even when I've heard a thousand others like it. I love a song about blood, fire and steel ("Blood, Fire & Steel") even though those topics have been covered plenty of times. I love when a vocalist shouts at the top of his lungs "beyond the black hole!!!!" I love pseudo-futuristic cover art like Nasty Savage's Loose 'N Lethal. If the early 80s gets your fist pumping, tune up the air guitar and grab a copy of Mankind Resistance. |
