In a turn of events few predicted but many hoped for, legendary black metal band Immortal, currently comprised of original guitarist Demonaz and drummer Horgh with former vocalist/guitarist Abbath going off on his own, is back with their ninth full-length album, Northern Chaos Gods. In addition to guitar duty, Demonaz now handles the vocals and displays an excellent rasping shout throughout the album and you won't miss Abbath one bit. Musically, Immortal strikes a perfect balance between raw aggression and melody, employing quieter guitar parts that complement the faster tremolo picking which sounds savage despite a clean production. Horgh's drumming is powerful and massive and he propels the songs without relying on blast beats giving them added richness. There's not one bad track but "Gates to Blashyrhk", "Called to Ice" and "Mighty Ravendark" are absolute monsters. Immortal shows they have plenty of gas in the tank as they release one of the best black metal albums of 2018.
