End of All Days is widely considered as the last album of Rage's golden era, which lasted from 1992 to 1996. This is the third record to feature a lineup with Sven Fischer and Spiros Efthimiadis, and basically the pillar for a more melodic approach of the band, which would last until much later when Mike Terrana and Viktor Smolski stepped in. Despite the melodic and lighter songwriting seen in songs like the title track, "Let the Night Begin", "Talking to the Dead" and "Higher Than the Sky" – the latter, in fact, would become Rage's most commercial and well-known track – this is one of the most heterogeneous albums of Peavy Wagner's career, with songs ranging from heavy as fuck like "Under Control" to dense and cold like "Deep in the Blackest Hole", "Voice From the Vault" and "Frozen Fire". It's a long album, but you most definitely won't see time passing by because of how well the tracks are separated, and because of the replay factor, as every song feels different from the other. All this, allied to a lower pitch in Peavy's voice and stellar production for its time, makes End of All Days feel unique and refreshing at all times. It was hard to beat the holy German triumvirate (Rage, Running Wild and Grave Digger) in the 90s, and this is yet another proof of that. |
