Nécrovortex is the second full-length from Canada's Outre-Tombe, a band that plays unadulterated death metal. I don't find the songwriting to be any sort of revelation, but the intensity of the performance takes the album to a higher level. The vocals are guttural without sounding like the singer has indigestion and the riffs are sharp and on the technical side but not cold or antiseptic. Outre-Tombe have a knack for atmosphere and even if you don't speak French the feeling of horror and dread is still palpable. This is the kind of stuff that makes me wonder where my life in music would have gone if I had heard this before getting turned off by the likes of Cannibal Corpse. It's never too late to start liking a new style and I like Nécrovortex quite a bit. If solid, well-played death metal is your thing, you will, too. |
