Hatchet is a second-generation Bay Area thrash band and Dying to Exist is their fourth full-length album. All the necessary thrash elements are here; tight, sharp riffs, clockwork drumming, high-pitched screams, etc. The singer is decent, but he hits the same note with his screams a lot and it really wears on your ears. The songs are fun listens but not very memorable as the writing is rather derivative. I bet this stuff has the potential to be killer in a live setting, but sitting through an album's worth in the car or at home is just tiring. If you eat and breathe thrash, especially bands like Toxik, Forbidden, Annihilator, etc. you'll likely enjoy Dying to Exist, but it just isn't anything you haven't heard many times before. |
