I couldn't shake the feeling that I knew the name of this band from somewhere, and that wasn't from my collection. It turns out I had recently read an interview in a magazine. Forget one-man black metal bands, this is a one-woman metal band for a change. Nachtlieder is firmly rooted in '90s Scandinavian black metal: Fast, thundering drums, visceral and busy guitar work and vocals that are out of this world. Said vocals are a highlight here, mixing the expected harsh and raw style of the genre with some beyond-the-grave rasps that will chill you to the bone. The songs sometimes feel a bit repetitive with the occasional one straying into a different vibe, but it's not too much of a bother since they're consistently good overall. The cold, sometimes hellish atmosphere also plays a hand in making this an album that you'll just want to play on repeat. A nice discovery. |
