I have been generally pleased over the past few years to see more bands emerge who have been driven to try and emulate Bal-Sagoth. Runeshard are a one-man band from Hungary definitely working that A Black Moon Broods Over Lemuria vibe, and doing it pretty well. The production is pretty good, about on a par with earlier Bal-Sagoth albums like Starfire Burning, and the playing is tight. The vocals are mostly just harsh, without a whole lot of narration, and what there is sounds a bit weak compared to Byron, but you can't have everything. As a Bal-Sagoth clone band this is aces, and you can't fault a band for sounding just like another band when that is so clearly the only reason they are doing this. With the real Bal-Sagoth MIA for the past 12 years, I would absolutely be down for a full-length by Runeshard. |
