Hangman's Revelations is the fifth full-length from Finland's Masquerage, a band that's been around for nearly 20 years now. Their brand of power metal is typically Finnish with major-chord riffs, tinkling keyboards and high, clear vocals. They don't abuse the double-kick drums, which is a refreshing change from what you normally get with bands from the land of sauna. Singer/guitarist Kimmo Perämäki sounds exactly like he did when he sang on Celesty's Reign of Elements album, so similarities between that band and Masquerage are inevitable. Masquerage's music has a warmer feel than Finnish power metal tends to have but otherwise it isn't pushing the envelope too much. There are some above average cuts like "Wrapped in Gold" and "No Wolves Here" but most of the album is fairly generic. As with the last album, Breaking the Masks, if bands like Sonata Arctica and Celesty are your cup of tea, you'll like Hangman's Revelations just fine. |
