Wow, this band has been around for 25 years and I had never heard of them prior to their 2018 EP, The Dust and Darkness, dropping into my review queue. To be fair, I'm not the biggest black metal fan. Anyway, the music on here is standard second wave black metal with evil, raspy vocals, tremolo picked guitars and clickety-click drums. The riffing isn't nearly as harsh as some bands and is fairly melodic for black metal. Black Funeral add some clean female vocals ("Dankius Daganzipas (Dark Earth)") and some weird keyboards ("Mistress of the Pit") playing what sounds like a bastardized church hymn which gives The Dust and Darkness some level of uniqueness. Other than that, the music is just sort of "there" and doesn't do much to excite or offend so, even though the band tries some different things, the resulting whole is bland. |
