The black/thrash revival shows no signs of slowing down so bands like Norway's Deathhammer have to find ways to distinguish themselves from the crowd. As they did on 2015's Evil Power, Deathhammer do that by going all-in with speed and energy, tapping the veins of early Slayer and Venom for a transfusion of amphetamine-spiked ichor. 2018's Chained to Hell picks up where Evil Power left off with the band ripping through track after track of blistering thrash. The howls are offset by some Tom Araya high-pitched screams and the riffing is more in line with the melodic playing of Show No Mercy while the energy is from the punk-fueled insanity of Welcome to Hell/Black Metal. They even step outside the box a bit with the slower, ominous instrumental "Into the Burning Pentagram." Yeah, this is not anything you haven't heard before but the wild abandon with which Deathhammer attacks their music while not losing their ear for melody makes Chained to Hell more than worth a couple of extra spins.
