My first listen of this album a few months ago failed to grab me, so I let it simmer for a while. Sometimes it's just a matter of being in the right mood for something and that was true in this case. While I don't find the album to be as exciting as some have commented online (that might be due to the sheer number of albums I listen to in a year), this is a very solid black metal album for this elusive Belgian band who don't ever appear to have a web site, Facebook page or whatever. The overall album is quite melodic but not the type of melody that often waters down the rawness of black metal. This thing sounds dark and eerily evil with an omnipresent haunting vibe and most of that is provided by the aforementioned melodies. Getting down to the metal, the album is mostly slow to mid-paced with a few faster passages here and there. The raspy vocals are top notch and just add to the atmosphere. Put all this together in the blender and you get a crushingly heavy, evil as fuck, nice slab of black metal. If it doesn't get you at first, just do what I did and let it simmer for a while. It's worth it. |
