Poseidon Will Carry Us Home is the third album from German metal warriors Hammer King and shows the band continuing to get better with each release. Crunchy power metal is what the band delivers so similarities with the likes of Grave Digger and Stormwarrior are hard to ignore, but there's an epic quality to the songwriting this time around that had me thinking of bands like Visigoth. The title track is the kind of rambunctious opener these types of albums live and breathe by and it is followed by more mid-paced, propulsive cuts like "The King is a Deadly Machine" and "Battle of Wars." There are some songs that aren't as good like the bland "Warriors of Angelhill" or the repetitive "Glorious Night of Glory" (there's a title that says it all), but then the thunderous "Where the Hammer Hangs" reminds you what Hammer King are capable of when on their game. An imperfect album, Poseidon Will Carry Us Home will nevertheless provide the crunch and crash fans of this king of metal have come to expect. |
