This Ichor (there are a few on Metal Archives) is the Australian version which is releasing its debut album, God of Thunder God of War via Séance Records. This release follows the Ichor demo a mere 25 years later, most of the band members serving in Nazxul in the interim. God of Thunder God of War is an atmospheric and melodic black metal album that tells tales of ancient times and mythical beings. The guitars are up front and fill almost all the available space in the mix, leaving the vocals and drums a bit underpowered. You can hear the beat, but it doesn't blast away at your eardrums. You can also pick out a word or two from the rasping vocals and I wish they were a bit more audible. The songwriting is decent but suffers from some repetition and picking out one from another can be a challenge. There is an attempt at creating aural landscapes of ancient places, but Ichor don't do it nearly as well as bands like Summoning or Caladan Brood. This isn't a bad release, it just doesn't grab you the way this kind of music can and thus works better as background music. |
