Review

It's been more than 12 years since the last Pagan Reign release, the disappointing Ancient Fortress. After that the band broke up, with several members going on to form the Slavic Folk project Tverd, which proceeded to underwhelm and annoy me for two albums of pedantic, theatrical, and dull music. I was not expecting to ever hear the glorious folk melodies of the real Pagan Reign again.

Now is one of those times when I am glad to be wrong. After the past output, I approached a new Pagan Reign album with caution, but this is every inch the album I wanted. Once Again is like everything that happened since Destinies of Bygone Faith was just a bad dream, and once again my speakers are filled with the hooky, folky, melodic magic of this band. When they are on, nobody else comes close, and they are so very, very on with this album. There are no skippers, no fillers, no off tracks. You just get song after song of soaring, beautiful guitar melodies and harmonized leads that carry you away to a lost and ancient land. Once Again is just pure gold all the way through.
