This is an interesting debut from The Sabbathian, a band who don't care if you know what they are into, obviously. I would say a name like that for a Doom band was a bit on the nose, but I like this album a lot, so I am prepared to overlook it. This is the latest project for the ubiquitous Chad Davis, of Hour of 13, the Ritualist, and a score of other occult/Doom type bands. He teamed up with Norwegian singer Anette Gulbrandsen and produced a fine, fine slab of Occult Doom The riffs on this thing are perfectly good, if not revelatory, but the recording is solid, and Gulbrandsens's vocals are haunting and evocative. The album breathes with a gloomy, arcane atmosphere that I really enjoy, and despite the band's name, it does not sound especially retro. There may be nothing showstopping on this album, but I never want to stop it partway through, and I enjoy it thoroughly. So, if you like female-fronted Doom Metal, then this is an album to check out. |
