Don't let the silly spelling of the band name fool you, this German band that existed for much of the '80s but without much output to show for it, is back for another go with their second album, Metal Fire. Musically, they are anything but silly. Chunky riffs, thick bottom end and gruff vocals are great ingredients to start an album with and Metall slings their fair share around Metal Fire. Cuts like "Metal Maniacs," "What is Real" and "Easy Rider" have an early US metal vibe; not too fast, not too slow, crunchy and melodic in equal measure. Throw the occasional fist in the air kind of stuff that isn't terribly memorable but cool when on. Some of the songs in the middle of the album ("Stay for a Night to Pray", for instance) have clunky choruses or forgettable riffs and bog the album down before it picks up steam again at the end. If you like the early music from bands like Metal Church and Savatage, this would be one to give a spin. |
