Under the Witching Cross is the second album from Oregon's Bewitcher, one of the plethora of bands mining the black/thrash revival vein and one that has done it better than a lot of their peers. From the quiet intro shattered by hellish screams on opener "Savage Lands of Satan," Bewitcher spew forth crusty old thrash riffs and evil vocals that are way past the red line in both volume and speed. Cuts like "Under the Witching Cross," "Too Fast for the Flames" and "Rome is on Fire" evoke the best things from those early Venom and Mercyful Fate albums and they even drop a well written and entertaining instrumental ("Frost Moon Ritual"), a la Metallica's "Call of Ktulu". Black/thrash is saturated, so bands have to be good at what they do to be noticed and Bewitcher have their dirty fingers firmly on the pulse of the genre.
