Impressive sophomore album from this French band. There was a time, maybe fifteen years back, when the French Black Metal scene produced some of the best bands in the world, and this album reminds me of that time—of great bands like Himinbjorg or Belenos—in fact this album reminds me of Belenos more than anything else. These songs are melodic, inventive, heavy, and actually catchy. I don't quite love all the vocal styles used on this album. The harsh rasps are fine, but they are sometimes replaced with a high-pitched screech that annoys me, or a sort of roughly-sung tone that is not as convincing. Those are just tiny flaws, but I notice them more in the context of such a quality album. If you miss the glory days of Belenos, then this is a band to get into. |
