Part of the wave of Greek and Italian epic bands who emerged in the early 2000s, Holy Martyr carved out a sound not too far removed from bands like Wotan, Battleroar, or Doomsword. This, their fourth album, comes six years after their last one. After their first two discs were on the themes of Hellenic heroism, Invincible was about Japan in WW2, and this one ends up in Middle-Earth. Stylistically there are no surprises here, with the same riff-driven, mid-paced epics fueled by good guitar work and memorable choruses. Nothing breaks the mold of previous works, but I find this one more substantial and memorable than Invincible, and it recalls their finest moments on Hellenic Warrior Spirit. Songs like "Numenor" and "Dol Gulder" bristle with heavy crunch and headbanging rhythms. The choruses may be a bit obvious, but you'll sing along anyway, and the quality riffs elevate everything well above the standard. If you love Epic Metal, then don't overlook Holy Martyr. |
