Review

Time to break out your hammer and shield, Sweden's Grand Magus are back with their ninth album of epic heavy metal. Grand Magus always get a nice, fat guitar tone and Wolf God is no exception. From the title track that opens the album to the closer "Untamed", the riffs are rib-rattling affairs though the production is a little too polished for my liking. That doesn't stop tracks like "A Hall Clad in Gold", "Spear Thrower" or my favorite "He Sent Them All to Hel" from being epic anthems of heavy metal. I like these faster songs because to my ears the guitars sound nastier and more ass-kicking than on the mid-paced cuts. Wolf God is a solid release from Grand Magus, not the equal of Triumph and Power in terms of epic sweep but certainly truer to form than The Hunt.
