Since 1991, Denial of God have only released two full-length albums and a few splits, but a ton of EPs. That seems to be their thing. The Shapeless Mass is another one of those, with two new songs and two covers. It's too bad that they don't produce full-lengths more often because the original songs are very good, without being all that different from a lot of black metal out there. Mid to fast-paced with decipherable raspy vocals and a vibe that's halfway between melancholic and evil-sounding, sometimes descending into a slow and heavy, very melodic style that will instantly stick in your head. The two original songs, the title track and "The Statues Are Watching" alone make it worth checking out. The two covers, "Call From the Grave" by Bathory and "Mama Loi, Papa Loi" by Exuma are a nice addition. The Bathory song is instantly recognizable, Denial of God putting their own little touch without sacrificing the beauty of the original. Having never heard Exuma before, I can't compare with the original, but it's definitely the quietest song here and ends the EP on a good rocking note. |
