Rest in Phantasy is the debut full-length from French symphonic metal band Dreamslave. It is a well-crafted disc that hits a lot of the right notes with some above-average vocal work that ranges from operatic to harsh growls. There are speedy cuts with accompanying fret- and keyboard wizardry and some slower, introspective songs, all with de rigueur fantasy-based lyrics. What Dreamslave don't have (yet) is the knack for writing really catchy choruses and since the songwriting is "by the book" symphonic metal, the album ends up being on the generic side. There's nothing to hate here but nothing to really love, which makes Rest in Phantasy a promising, if not amazing debut for Dreamslave. |
