I almost didn't grab this promo and I'm certainly glad I did. Montreal's Wykan offer a melodic mix of black, doom and Black Sabbath-ish '70s metal and, as icing on the cake, one if bound to notice some Pink Floyd-esque element as well. It's a risky proposition, but Wykan were up to the challenge. This is just beautiful music from beginning to end, chock-full of melodies that grab your inner soul, a doomy vibe that's just depressing enough (some bits remind me a little bit of Ottawa's Norilsk) and there's, of course, an occasional harder edge that threatens to go into full black metal blasting, stopping just short and going back to doom. All of this stuff is glued together by some really well executed black metal rasps. Unfortunately, being an EP, this is on the short side, so let's hope that they have an album in the oven and that they can keep up with the quality. |
