Debut album for Isenblast, who are essentially a side project of the guys in Demon Bitch, and have been gigging around for the past decade or so. This was released on vinyl by Austenitized Records in 2017, but this is the CD rerelease by Dystopian Dogs. From the cover I was expecting some hell-blasting Death Metal, but instead this is very US Black Metal, reminiscent of old-school acts like Krieg. The riffs are solid, the playing is feral, and the raw production mixes everything together into a sepulchral bellow that sounds like it's emanating from a crypt in the woods. There's nothing really revolutionary about this, but it does borrow a lot more from the first and second wave sounds than anything modern, and so in the often very trendy US scene it is a refreshing change of pace. |
