Whispers in the Maze is a new band out of Canada and Threads Unbind is their debut EP. It contains four tracks of solid, melodic death metal characterized by a crisp guitar sound smoothed by effects so don't expect to be bludgeoned by the riffs. The vocals are a decipherable raspy growl that is somewhere between black and death but mesh well with the sound Whispers in the Maze have crafted. I wouldn't call this "progressive", but you can hear the band leaning that way with the clear, intricate solos and emphatic bass work which is given a spot near the front of the mix. "Rewoven" is my pick of the four songs with its hauntingly urgent chorus. Threads Unbind is a surprisingly mature effort from a young band and that means melodic death metal fans should put Whispers in the Maze on the radar for their next effort.
