Reign in Supreme Darkness is the second studio effort from Vargrav, a melodic black metal band from Finland. After an overly long intro, Vargrav blasts you with seven songs of frenzied, tremolo-picked guitars, hellish keyboards and demonic croaks designed to evoke dark and violent lands like the one depicted on the cover. Distinguishing one track from the next is a challenge as the tempo rarely slows, but I commend the band on some of the stylish song titles like "Arcane Stargazer" and "In Streams from Great Mysteries." The music is well played and the production spacious, which adds a haunting element to the songs. Reign in Supreme Darkness is bit generic as a whole but fine while on and you can do much worse in terms of melodic black metal. |
