Enemy Awake is a duo project that was put together by Ivan Castro and Melinn Törne in 2017 under the name Enemy Inside. Their debut album, The Enemy, gives us some crushing Swedish Death Metal goodness that borrows elements from Thrash, Melodeath, and even Traditional Metal. Ivan's guitar tone sounds like it came straight from the '90s, and it's often heavy enough to compensate for the band's lack of a bass player, and Melinn's bestial grunts add some real urgency to the proceedings. For the most part, you get songs like "Destroyer" which contains all the expected pieces needed to make some killer Swedish Death Metal, but on songs like "Melody of Death", they mix things up with Melinn's beautiful clean singing, which gives this album much more identity than it would have otherwise. The biggest drawback of this album is the programmed drums. They occasionally get the job done, but most of the time they sound very artificial and take away a lot of the aggression from the proceedings. Nevertheless, with a little more polish and a better drum sound, this duo could become a real contender in the Death Metal world. A band to watch. |
