A Stone Engraved in Red is the third full-length from Portugal's epic heavy metal warriors, Ravensire. Big, fat guitars, huge, rolling riffs and marching drumbeats are the band's stock-in-trade, and tracks like "Carnage and Karnag" and "Gabriel Lies Sleeping" evoke whispers of legends like Manilla Road and Manowar as well as newer artists like Grand Magus and Argus. They have a firm grip on creating track after track of "throw your fist in the air" songs and I love the music on A Stone Engraved in Red but I must admit the vocals of Rick Thor are a bit of an issue for me. He's got the requisite gravelly shout for the music, but he over-emotes and often warbles extra notes, both of which I find distracting. I'm sure many fans will have no issue with his singing, so don't let that stop you from checking out Ravensire if you haven't already. |
