Iron Kingdom is a band that plays metal with a traditional '80s vibe featuring twin guitars, high-pitched vocals and loads of melody. On the Hunt is their fourth full-length and it's a solid affair that effectively mixes faster and slower tempos, keeping the album from bogging down (until the closing ballad, which is bland but at least it is at the end of the album). It took me a couple of spins for the singer's voice to sink in as initially I found his delivery a bit odd, but it finally clicked and now I can't imagine songs like "White Wolf" or "Keep it Steel" without them. I've read a few comparisons between Iron Kingdom and Iron Maiden, but I don't really hear it. Personally, I heard a lot of Fates Warning on their earlier albums, but the huge hooks and rippling drum fills on this one remind me more of late '80s Riot or late '90s Hammerfall. On the Hunt doesn't do anything particularly new but it is a well-executed display of traditional metal nevertheless. |
