Australia's Nocturnes Mist adhere to many of black metal's signature elements. The vocals are terror-inducing howls, the guitars produce a cacophony of dissonance and the drums rake eardrums like a nest of machine guns. Marquis of Hell is the band's fourth full-length and tracks like "Eyes in Fear" and "War Machine" are competent but they sound like a lot of other black metal (not that there is anything inherently wrong with that). Where Nocturnes Mist separates themselves from the crowd is on songs like the title track and the massive "Wolves of Satan." The tempos are slowed to doom metal pace and the band includes some Black Sabbath-like chord progressions that really grab your attention after the blistering speed that opens the album. It's the variety on Marquis of Hell, the "black/doom" synthesis, that illustrates how Nocturnes Mist is open to trying something different and making it work. Marquis of Hell is solid black metal that gives you what you expect and more. |
