What do you get when you combine the guitarist from Ice War with the vocalist from Outline? You get Aphrodite's debut album, Lust and War. As you would expect from dedicated old-school musicians, Aphrodite surrounds their proto-thrash speed metal music with a D.I.Y. sound and just lets it fly from the opening notes of "Hades in the Night". Lust and War does a fine job capturing the feel of the early '80s, but the songs sound a lot alike and the vocal lines are fairly basic, making it hard to distinguish one track from the next. With that in mind, I found the album started dragging quite a bit by the second half though I must say the closer, "Gladiators (Gladiators)" has a strong Girlschool vibe and is easily the best song on Lust and War. To me this album sounds not quite finished, but with more variety to the songwriting, Aphrodite could be on to something. |
