Cheesy, pompous, unpretentious, ludicrous, fun! Germany's happiest band (sorry Hellowen) is back to turn brutal metalheads into dreamer teenagers once again with their new journey to unicorn land. Perhaps the only dude in all metal who can write cliché songs with absurd lyrics and get away with it, Chris Bay delivers another slab of catchy power metal by mixing current Freedom Call elements with the band's fondest memories, music-wise. There are, of course, candy corn moments like "Ace of the Unicorn" and "One Step Into Wonderland", but marvelous efforts such as the epic "Sail Away" and "Wheel of Time" will make you remember the golden days of power metal, and of the band itself. M.E.T.A.L. is a beautiful time machine that will take you to the late '90s like few other albums today will. It's all a power metal fan can hope for, and a reminder that metal can be as simple and fun as it can be, and still kick ass. Freedom Call rules. |
