Something Blut Aus Nord can't be accused of, is of being predictable. While I had this album on rotation, I decided to take their previous album out for a spin and it doesn't even sound like the same band. 2017's Deus Salutis Meae sounded a bit like Anaal Nathrakh in slow motion, which made it kind of trippy and massively fucked up, to say the least. Hallucinogen, on the other hand, is a work of art in melodic, atmospheric black metal. As screechy as the previous album sounded, this album is largely a repository of beautiful melodies delivered with a gloomy and haunting style that will steal your soul and stomp on it. These French black metallers sure know how to torture the mind and make it so enjoyable that you just can't get enough. Hallucinogen sounds just like its title. It successfully sends you on a trip without the need to take actual hallucinogens. The music and vocals are way out there and successfully grab the listener from the first second all the way to the end. French black metal in general may have been in a bit of a slump following a few very remarkable years, but it's been getting back on track lately and Hallucinogen is way up there on top of the pile.
