If you like your black metal fast and furious, à la Setherial or Marduk, for example, then The Legion is for you. "Unseen to Creation" is a relentless barrage of speedy and aggressive metal punctuated with occasional slower, more melodic parts - something I'd say is quite welcome, since it prevents the album for becoming a boring monotone bag of notes played fast (let's face it, there's a lot of that out there...) There are some more death metal-ish overtones here and there, I even draw some parallels with The Chasm in a couple of spots (although The Chasm does the equivalent stuff better, in my opinion.) Note that this isn't like The Chasm at all, it is some very specific passages that reminded me of the Chicago metallers, and it took me long enough to figure out where I had heard this that I just had to say it. :) The vocals vary from screeches to low growls, although the screeches win hands down here. Good except in a couple of places where I couldn't help but be reminded a little of Dani Filth - not enough to be a turn off, but that didn't help. :)

I found the album a bit boring at first, and I did well in delaying the review to give it some more listens. It is only after several listens that it really began to sink in, revealing more depth than I originally thought. I'm still noticing new things after some 20 listens, so there's quite a bit to keep one occupied for a while here. Fans of speedy Swedish/Norwegian BM will most likely be interested in this, while those who are in the more "necro", minimalistic BM will want to look elsewhere. Listenable Records have been signing some pretty good bands, and The Legion is one of them. Recommended.
