Germany's Stormwarrior have been plying the metal seas with their version of fast, crunchy music for over 20 years now. At the core of their sound is a Helloween Walls of Jericho template (former Helloween front man Kai Hansen's name is all over their early releases as guest musician, producer, etc.) dressed up with Norse lyrics and they've stayed true since the beginning. As much as we fans appreciate it when a band never wavers, any style can get stale and while Stormwarrior's last couple of albums, Heathen Warrior and Thunder & Steele were fine, they lacked the "heavy metal fire" (to quote Stormwarrior's 2003 EP of the same name) of earlier releases. Well, the inhabitants of Lindisfarne, London and Brittany had best prepare themselves for a new assault because here come Norsemen.

On their sixth album, Stormwarrior put their backs to the oars and row like their long boat is being followed by a sea monster. Fans of double-kick drumming and crisp, meaty riffs will find their hearts racing from "Norsemen (We Are)" straight through "Sword of Valhalla." The songwriting is what separates Norsemen from its predecessors with vocal lines and choruses that are catchy and smooth. Singing along with "Storm of the North" and "Sword Dane" is easier than falling off a log and while all the songs are in the same style, Stormwarrior have succeeded in imbuing each one with enough individuality that the album never gets boring.

As with any style, if power metal isn't your thing, you might not appreciate the subtle differences that separate Norsemen from Stormwarrior's other recent albums. If it is your thing, and especially if you like Stormwarrior's particular brand of Viking mayhem, you're in for a treat.
