From the fertile Russian underground comes Death Metal 4-piece Hekata, who formed in 2015 and had a string of smaller releases before recording this, their 2018 debut. Musically, this takes the trademark bone-crushing heaviness of Swedish Death Metal and peppers it with some Black Metal shrieks and even some Crust to create a fairly novel sound. That description might scare off the purists, but I for one appreciate it when a band has the balls to experiment with their sound like this while avoiding the trap of becoming a silly novelty act. Just listen to the catchy Thrash riffage of "Liar" and you'll see what I'm talking about. At only six songs and under 30 minutes, this is shorter than I would have liked, but it certainly makes me want more from this band as soon as possible. In the meantime, I'd recommend you get a hold of this so you'll share that hunger with me. |
