Spain's War Dogs first full-length is the kind of album that makes you crack a half-smile. Their roots are definitely in the '80s school of catchy, cheesy and straightforward heavy metal, with a healthy dose of speed to boot. Bouncy riffs, squealing solos, cheesy lyrics that often call for a singalong and very strong melodies are what Die by My Sword is made of and that's a winner to so many eardrums out there. The vocalist has that bit of an off-putting style that reminds me a little bit of Falconer's Mathias Blad—he's good, but I can't help but feel that the style clashes a little bit with the music. Then again, I was only one of few saying that of Falconer, soooo... Hear it for yourself and decide. At the end of the day, Die by My Sword is a fun little album of straightforward, catchy heavy metal that doesn't invent anything but is bound to at least get your foot tapping. |
