Power metal fans surely know what to expect from Belgium's Magic Kingdom, who with MetAlmighty now have five full-length albums to their credit. Even if you aren't a fan, a quick perusal of the song titles ("Unleash the Dragon", "In the Den of the Mountain Trolls", "Rise from the Ashes, Demon") should lead one down the path of fantasy power metal from the same mold that turned out Rhapsody, Dragonland, Kaledon and a host of others. The vocals are clear and strong but not insanely high-pitched, which is nice, while still delivering the passion that sells the choruses on every song. The production is sharp without being sterile, so the guitars still have a good deal of crunch and allows the neoclassical lead work and keyboards to lift the spirits of the listener as they soar into the sky. As for the songwriting, let's be honest, how many double-kick songs about dragons can there be? What I'm saying is the songs on MetAlmighty are going to sound familiar to fans of this style, but Magic Kingdom have done a great job of keeping things entertaining while coloring within the lines. This is an excellent example of fantasy-based power metal that may not be the album that wins a lot of new converts but will easily please the faithful.
