This is a kind of supergroup, though not as super as that would sound. What I mean is that the band members have been in a lot of other bands, and some of them still are, with acts like Dark Funeral, Therion, Vader, Hypocrisy, Asphyx, and Nattravnen on their collective resumes, sometimes in a studio capacity, sometimes as touring musicians. Together the guys rack up more than 40 other bands they have been a part of, so this is an act full of veterans who know their shit. The experience shows in the tight compositions and solid playing, and this is a very pro, very polished sounding album. The guitar sound is good, and the band isn't shy about chugging away and just being heavy for the sake of it. The songwriting approach is very much in the tradition of turn-of-the-century Melodic Death Metal, drawing heavily on the sound of early Amon Amarth and adding in little flourishes that sound like Dark Tranquility or Hypocrisy. I would say it sounds a bit dated, but I think it actually avoids that trap and comes off as more like an homage. Heavy, riffy Death Metal with a lot of melody and a sharp recording. Maybe a bit glossy for some tastes, but well done. |
