Germans do many things well and crunchy power metal is high on the list. Invictus is a band formed in 2017 and Eden may be their first album, but it sounds like these guys have been at it for years. Eden starts with a barnburner in "The Hammer" and goes through its paces, touching on bands like Riot here, Helloween there and Gamma Ray over that way but never outright copies them. Invictus do an especially fine job with the vocals, filling the choruses of tracks like "Livin' in the Future" with hooks aplenty, supplementing them with Accept-like shouted backing vocals that you'll soon be shouting along with. Eden is full of moments that remind you of why you like heavy metal in the first place. It is complex without being complicated, happy without being flowery and crunchy without losing melody. If you enjoy albums such as Thundersteel, Keeper of the Seven Keys, Pt. 1 & 2 and Land of the Free, do yourself a favor and give Eden a spin. |
