War Dogs is a Spanish band that plays in a very traditional metal style on their album Die by My Sword. The singer has a voice that reminds me of Visigoth's Jake Rogers, both in how much he sounds like Rogers and how he arranges his vocal lines. The riffs are solid with perhaps a little less flash and more of a NWOBHM looseness and melodic sensibility. Tracks like "Master of Revenge" kick a fair amount of ass, but there's a clear line from the accessible songwriting of 70s hard rock icons like Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple to what War Dogs is doing. Nothing wrong with that, of course, it just jumps out in a couple of places as if War Dogs hasn't quite settled on which direction they want to go. Overall, Die by My Sword is an enjoyable slab of trad metal that doesn't bother trying to be too fast or to fancy. |
