Constellation is the third album from Pete Ahonen's Stargazery and it is exactly what you would expect from one of the pillars of Finnish power metal (Ahonen also fronts Burning Point and Ghost Machinery). It is an album full of smooth, melodic metal that really rides right down the center of the genre, plenty catchy, not too fast, not overly operatic. I picture Pete listening to a lot of Rainbow in his youth as there are nods throughout Constellation to Ritchie Blackmore's second band, from the vocal lines and chorus structures to the vaguely Middle Eastern melodies. It's performed flawlessly but the production is on the muted side, so the delivery feels sort of quiet. It also doesn't have very many double kick barn burners and when you combine those things with some rather formulaic songwriting, you end up with I would call a "vanilla" power metal album. There's nothing wrong with vanilla, it just feels like you've heard it so many times already and there just isn't enough excitement to overshadow that fact. I'm not saying don't buy Constellation, it is better than their last one, just don't expect any surprises.
