Titans is the third album from Austria's Mortician (not counting the No War & More compilation, which you shouldn't because it is awful) and their take on the loose and loud early '80s style of metal. I liked their self-titled debut but the follow-up, Shout for Heavy Metal, was a return to the awfulness of the compilation, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Basically, Titans lies somewhere in between, full of mid-paced, crunchy songs that travel down the center lane of metal. Gritty vocals, Motörhead-inspired riffs and lyrics about rock music ("Titans of Rock", "Can't Stop Rock'n Roll) and other generally "metal" topics ("Inmates", "Hell Raiders") are wrapped up in generic songwriting that is not great but isn't all that bad, either. New singer Twain Cooper is big step up from Daniel Khan and sounds a little like Udo Dirkschneider from early in his career, giving Titans a sort of "thrashy Accept" vibe. It is the kind of inoffensive and unremarkable metal that makes good background music at a bar in between bands but doesn't deliver much upon closer scrutiny. |
